Developing the citizens of tomorrow through the best education of today.

Our Governors

What Ofsted says…

“Governors know the school well and are committed to their roles. They are fully aware of what the school does well and what it needs to do to improve. They have high ambitions for all pupils and make effective checks on many aspects of school life.”

March 2025

Our Governors provide their time to help the school on a voluntary basis and come from a range of different backgrounds.  There are a variety of different roles within the Governing Board, but ultimately it involves working with the Head Teacher and Senior Leadership Team, to make sure the pupils at Chancel receive the best possible education.

Our Constitution

The Governing Board at Chancel School is made up of a mixture of 11 elected individuals. There are currently 2 Parent Governors, who are elected by parents at the school; 6 Co-opted Governors; 1 Local Authority Governor; 1 Staff Governor along with an additional Associate Governor. The Head Teacher is also a member of the Governing Body by virtue of post.

All Governors are appointed for a term of four years.

Parent Governors

Parent Governors are elected by the parents/guardians of the children who attend Chancel Primary School. When a governor position becomes vacant nominations will be asked from all registered parents and guardians and an election will take place.

LA Governors

Our LA Governor is appointed by the Local Authority. More information can be found at www.staffordshire.gov.uk.

Staff Governors

Staff Governors are elected by the staff.

Co-opted Governors

A Co-opted Governor is a person who has the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school and is appointed by the Governing Body.

Governing Body Responsibilities

There are three key responsibilities of all school Governing Bodies:

  • To set the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school
  • To hold the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and
  • To oversee the financial performance of the school and to make sure its money is well spent

At Chancel, our aim is to work together with the school Senior Leadership Team to ensure that our children get the best possible education; they will be happy and safe and they enjoy their time at school. We will support the Head Teacher and the dedicated team of staff, but also we will challenge where necessary to ensure that we deliver our objectives.

Governors welcome feedback from the whole school community and we want you to tell us what you think about how we are doing. If you have any comments you wish to make about our school, any of the governors would be happy to hear from you. Please speak to any one of us, or contact us at governors@chancel.staffs.sch.uk

If, however, you have a concern about the school then talk to one of the governors. If you want to make a complaint about an issue at the school then you need to speak to the Head Teacher, if you are still not satisfied then the matter can be raised with the Chair of Governors.
